Cub Scout Trip to the Fire Department

Cole, Kara and I joined the rest of his Cub Scout den for a trip to a local Fire Department.  We had a good time and learned quite a bit.  We started in the firehouse and looked at their kitchen (there are three shifts, so they have three refrigerators to keep food separate), their media room (they are only allowed to have the tv on from noon to one during lunch, and then after 9:00 pm), their workout room (minimum of one hour a day), and where they sleep.  They turned the lights out and then turned on the siren that would wake them if there was an emergency.  They definitely need an upgrade, because most of us agreed that it was so faint that it wouldn't wake us up!  Once they hear the siren, they have two minutes to have their gear on and be on a truck, ready to head out.

Once we got outside, the boys were much more interested in the trucks.  The firefighters showed the boys some of the buttons and switches, and they were allowed to turn them on/off.  We saw hoses, equipment, oxygen tanks, medical supplies...  We were starting to wrap up when the siren sounded and they were called out to a medical emergency.  Kind of neat to see them leave with their lights flashing, even if it cut our outing a bit short.
