We got a great deal from a Groupon for Cole to play basketball at the YMCA this winter. We've taken classes through the Y before, and usually you get a really good instructor who will encourage the kids, make sure they learn sportsmanship, and have fun while playing. We've realized how good their classes are after taking a couple through the Kentwood Parks and Rec, which can be hit or miss.
Cole was excited to play, but was his usual, slightly apprehensive self when it came to having the ball around him (catching, passing, shooting...). Let's say he was an excellent runner on the court. : )
He was good about being near the ball, but generally out of sight from the ball handler. Can't be seen = can't be passed the ball.
We offered to have him take another class immediately following the first, since he was having fun and becoming less fearful of the ball. Several parents told us the the second time taking the class is when their child really started to make progress. Cole, however, declined. Oh well, at least we can add basketball to the list of sports we've tried.
One thing that Cole really likes about playing at the Y is that you get a medal. : )
