We went on our first camping trip of the summer at the end of June. We picked a campground that was only 40 minutes from our house and near a decent sized town (in case we forgot anything!). There was a small inland lake in the park which was quite shallow and warm (although kind of icky, but I was the only one we noticed that) and perfect for the kids to try out their new water toys. They aren't very brave in the water, so we were pretty happy with how much they were willing to do. Cole had tried wakeboarding when we were in Florida over Thanksgiving and loved it, so he was excited to have his own board and kept trying to get on it and stay up.
They also loved staying up late (10:30!) and everything related to the dark. Sparklers, catching fireflies in the special bug box, talking walks and looks at the lights on other tents and trailers... Lots of fun!
It did literally rain on our parade as we woke up Sunday morning to very overcast skies which quickly turned to heavy rain. We hurried to pack up, but were soaked and muddy and irritated. As soon as we were packed up and leaving, the rain stopped and the sun came out. Bummer, we thought, as we could have stayed and dried out a bit and had some more fun. We headed for home and made the most of the rest of the day. Turns out that leaving was the best decision we made, because there were tornadoes that were near the campground in a second storm that happened a few hours later. Being in/near a tornado is bad anytime, but in a tent? Yikes! Thank goodness that first storm drove us away!
